White County Jail Release Destinations
A person leaving White County Jail may enter the community under a court order, pretrial release, time-served result, probation order, or completed county sentence. The same door also handles transfers. A White County prisoner can be delivered to the Illinois Department of Corrections. Hamilton or Edwards County detainees may return to their controlling county. A U.S. Marshals Service detainee may travel to another contract jail, federal court, BOP, or another federal placement.
The facility's own movement record is the best evidence of what happened at the Carmi jail. It should preserve positive identification, date, time, authority, disposition, and destination. A court order explains the legal reason, but it does not prove that staff completed checkout or that no other hold applied. A receiving custodian confirms continued custody after the person leaves this building.
| Recorded destination | Meaning | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Community | Physical release from the jail, subject to stated court terms | White County court order |
| IDOC | Transfer into state prison custody | IDOC offender detail |
| Hamilton or Edwards County | Return to another county custodian | Controlling sheriff or court |
| USMS or federal destination | Federal custody or movement may continue | Federal docket, USMS, then BOP if committed |
Confirm White County Jail Release
No official public White County Jail roster, booking-detail search, or recent-release feed was located during the official-channel sweep. Calling and requesting the maintained record are therefore the practical official routes. Avoid asking only whether the person is “out.” That wording can hide a transfer.
- Call the jail at 618-382-7149 with the full name, date of birth, and booking number if known.
- Ask whether the person is presently held. If not, request the exact departure date and time, authority, disposition, and destination.
- Search the White County court case for the order, dismissal, sentence, probation entry, or mittimus tied to departure.
- If the destination was IDOC, another county, or federal custody, verify with that receiving system.
- Request the jail's written release or transfer entry when a lasting record is needed.
The broader White County released inmate search explains how IDOC, VINE, BOP, ICE, and the court file fit around the local jail record. Use each source only for the custody system it covers.
White County Jail Records Contact
The official White County Jail site identifies the facility and its direct phone. The Sheriff keeps local jail records. Administrative office hours apply to the Sheriff's office, while release timing should be checked with the jail itself.

A focused written request should identify the Sheriff or Jail as the record-holding department. Give the full name, birth date, booking number if known, and approximate admission. Ask for admission, release or transfer date and time, authority, disposition, destination, receiving custodian, and a nonexempt transfer reference. Ask for segregable public portions if part of the record is withheld.
The county departments and FOIA page supplies the formal request route. The county FOIA officer is at 307 E. Cherry Street, Carmi, IL 62821, phone 618-382-7522. Illinois FOIA generally allows five business days for a noncommercial response and a notified extension for statutory reasons.
White County Jail Release Fields
The 2024 inspection documents a structured departure procedure. Staff positively identify the person, record date, time, and authority, conduct a physical inspection and release search, inventory and return property, document maintenance medication, and keep delivery paperwork for IDOC transfers. These fields can distinguish a community release from movement to another custodian.
- Authority
- The order, sentence calculation, warrant direction, or transfer instruction permitting movement.
- Disposition
- The formal result recorded by the jail.
- Destination
- The community, state prison, another county, federal custodian, hospital, or other endpoint.
- Transfer
- A change of facility or custodian while government custody continues.
Ask separately for the booking photograph if it is maintained and disclosable. Medical and personal fields may be withheld or redacted under applicable law. A narrow request for one booking is more useful than a broad list and reduces mistaken identity.
White County Jail Property Release
The inspected procedure records property at admission in the detainee's presence, with officer and detainee signatures. Third-party pickup requires authorization and a recipient signature. At departure, staff inventory and return property, and the signed release receipt is retained permanently under the local procedure.
That receipt gives a released person a concrete record for a property discrepancy. It can also support the fact that a departure transaction occurred. It does not prove community release alone, since property can accompany a transfer. The disposition and destination remain essential. A released person may seek their own medical or medication records where the procedure permits, but private health details about someone else should not be requested.
White County Jail Federal Transfers
White County contract-houses U.S. Marshals Service detainees. USMS legal custody can run from federal remand through release, acquittal, or delivery to BOP after conviction. A detainee may leave Carmi for another contract jail or a federal court while remaining in custody. USMS does not offer a public historical released-prisoner locator comparable to BOP.
For a federal pretrial departure, obtain the jail destination and read the federal court order. Seek confirmation from the actual custodian when available. After BOP admission, the BOP locator can show custody and eventual release. A past BOP date with Released or Not in BOP Custody confirms exit from BOP only. It does not establish the end of federal supervision or the absence of custody elsewhere.
No White County ICE detention contract was verified. If an immigration detainer is reported, ask the jail for the authority and destination, then verify with the named receiving agency. Do not infer an ICE transfer without that evidence.
White County Jail Contract Prisoners
The inspection also identifies Hamilton County and Edwards County prisoners housed under contract. White County can confirm when someone physically left its building. The controlling county may hold the case, authorize release, or receive the person back. A White County “out” response therefore needs a second check.
Ask whether the departure was a return, an IDOC delivery, a USMS movement, or a community release. Then contact the controlling sheriff or court. This is one of the strongest reasons to request destination instead of relying on roster status or a third-party label.
White County Jail Receiving Records
When the jail reports an IDOC destination, search the state record by last name, IDOC number, or birth date. Match more than one identifier. An institution location following a White County departure supports transfer into state custody. A later PAROLE status and past Parole Date can document release from prison to supervision, while an actual Discharge Date or discharged sentence marks a later milestone.
For a local community release, the White County Circuit Clerk file may show the release order, dismissal, time-served judgment, probation order, or sentence behind departure. The clerk can provide a public or certified copy when the online entry is incomplete. Neither source replaces the jail's checkout time. Read the court authority, jail movement, and receiving record in sequence so a state transfer is never reported as community release.
White County Jail Release Timing
No official source states a fixed release hour, weekend schedule, exit door, or family waiting place. Call the jail shortly before an expected departure. Ask where to wait and whether the court order has been processed. A hearing time is not a checkout time.
Identity checks, authority review, property inventory, medication documentation, and searches for other holds can separate the court's order from actual release. Record which agency supplied each timestamp. If they differ, obtain the underlying order and jail entry rather than selecting one time without context.
White County Jail Facility History
White County Jail is a county facility operated by the Sheriff. The official site describes care for sentenced and unsentenced people, including work release and periodic imprisonment. The building was constructed in 1975 and last renovated in 1978. Its rated capacity is 78, with 58 male and 20 female spaces.
The July 18, 2024 inspection counted 21 people on that one day. It also described 12 double detention rooms, one six-bed dorm, six eight-bed dorms, and a safety room excluded from capacity. These are building facts and one-day figures. They must not be converted into annual release totals, booking counts, or average stay.
The official Sheriff homepage also promotes the agency's app.
The verified app listing describes reports, tips, and public-safety news. It does not verify an inmate roster, release feed, or mugshot feature.
